Surajit  Sengupta was a classical winger, quick on his feet and had dribbling skills that helped to outfox defences. He had a sharp game sense and could send pinpointed crosses and his trademark curling lobs for the strikers to hit home. His artistry and sharp game reading ability became the stuff of Maidan football legend.

Surajit  Sengupta was born in Chakbazar in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. His father , Suhas Sengupta , Was a football and cricket  player. He did his schooling at Hooghly Branch School and then went on to study at Hooghly Mohsin College.

He made his domestic debut playing for the Kidderpore club in 1971, before moving to Mohun Bagan AC (1972 – 1974). He later moved to East Bengal FC ( 1974 – 1980), Mohammedan SC (1980 – 1981), before returning to Mohan Bagan (1981- 1983). He had represented India in the 1974 and 1978 Asian  Games, Merdeka Cup in 1974, and the 1977 President’s Cup at Seoul.

Surajit Sengupta died of Covid19 related complications on 17th February 2022.He left behind his wife and son.
