Dr Ambar Ballav grew up in Kolkata. He went to Scottish Church school and graduated in medicine from NRS Medical college. He joined the West Bengal Health service as a Medical Officer in district hospitals in and around Kolkata. He completed his post-graduation in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) from IPGMER, Kolkata. He went on to join the Medical Education Service and worked at medical colleges at Bankura and Kolkata. As a professor in PMR, he took charge of the School of Physical Medicine at IPGMER, Kolkata, supervising postgraduate trainees in PMR, and Physiotherapy. He was a constant presence in the national and state association of PMR collaborating with peers on research projects, chairing scientific committees in national and state conferences, and delivering lectures to august audiences. He was faculty and examiner in the National Board program in PMR. After his retirement he continued to be actively involved in postgraduate medical training and clinical care, taking on a teaching and clinical appointment at the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities in Kolkata. He continued to attend to patients and supervise his trainees until he was taken ill with Covid 19 and succumbed to the infection in July 2020.
Dr Ballav is fondly remembered for an unfaltering passion for his specialty, and a fatherly affection for his trainees. He had a deep sense of responsibility for his patients, trainees, and family, caring for his frail mother up until his last days. He managed to find joy in the mundane and took delight in sharing the simple pleasures of life, from travel to food, with those around him. He slipped away quietly in this pandemic without goodbye. He leaves behind his wife, son, daughter in law, and his much-adored granddaughter.
