He had dreamt of and was all set to get his medicine postgraduate certificate in a couple of months unless Covid came in to cloud life all around. He was one who would love to learn medicine with hunger and thirst to be enabled to serve with more skills and focus. He was almost there, a long way through a long, tenuous and tiresome journey, as it was for him and for a medical professional, to get past the series of sluice gates that give access to knowledge, expertise and acclaim. A ruthless nature, in the disguise of a virus, is truncating many such divine entourages. It is a pity that Sohail could not sustain the cruel onslaught or rather, we did not succeed to salvage him from a disaster. The pen shudders as we write to commit ourselves to the crudest reality that Sohail will not be taking his rounds in Mckenzie and Cable wards from now on . Dr. Abdullah Sohail Hasin, a 3rd year resident of the Dept. of Medicine, IPGMER and SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, left us for his heavenly abode on 26th of May, 2021 after a 39 day long battle with Covid pneumonia.
Born on the 4th of April, 1986 in Berhampore, West Bengal, Dr Sohail completed his schooling from Krishnath Collegiate School. Hailing from a family of engineers, Dr. Sohail however found his true calling in the noble profession of medical science, and he graduated from Calcutta National Medical College, Kolkata. He got a Diploma in Anaesthesiology, and then he devoted a significant part of his life in service to the people of rural Bengal. Always a scholar, he then pursued a post graduate degree in Medicine from IPGMER, Kolkata where he was currently enrolled.
As a person, Dr. Sohail embodied exactly what his profession demanded: Patience, composure and gentleness. Despite his flourishing career, he remained unassuming and humble till his very last day as a Covid warrior. In his personal life, Dr. Sohail was avidly interested in numismatics, and never lost an opportunity to be with his family.
Dr. Sohail is survived by his parents Md. Nazrul Islam and Nazala Begum, his wife Sahina, his 5-year-old daughter Afia Sana and his elder brother Abu Ismail. We are all devastated at the loss of such a young soul. He will be missed by his friends, family and patients. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and hold Dr. Sohail in our prayers always.
