Passed away on 27-10-2020

A phone call from Dr. Amal Roy’s ancestral home in Medinipore informed that Dr. Roy passed away. The sentence remained incomplete and the voice started to quiver, all that could be heard was sobs. Just the day before, we spoke,  Amal da was telling me: “I am fine. Don’t worry Sir. I will go to the hospital in a day or two and give rounds of it.” Amal da was not only close to me, he was one of my closest.

He was known as a straightforward and a rude person, I realized he really was madly in love with his duty. He would often forget to have his food.

He would financially help patients to buy medicine. Whenever there was negligence he would lose his calm. It seemed as if the hospital was his home, the patients his family and he was their only guardian. I had full trust in this man who was the favorite of everyone. He used to encourage junior doctors and say: “Work hard, this is the age to work.”

When coronavirus engulfed the whole world Dr. Roy devoted him to the service of others. When all doctors, nurses, health workers in the hospital were getting affected, Dr. Roy came and stood there like an angel. While taking care of patients he caught fever. He tested positive for Covid-19 and was admitted the next day. The day after that he was sent to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. I used to keep track of him. He was discharged from the hospital and was recovering slowly. Whenever I used to talk to him, the reference of the hospital used to come up.

Durga Puja had just got over. There is a melody of sadness all over. Durga Maa will come again next year, but the greatest fool in the world will not come back again to say: “Don’t worry Sir. I am here.”
