Professor Abhijit Basu was born in Calcutta on 30th December, 1948. He completed his schooling from one of the top five schools of the then Calcutta, Ballygunge Govt High School. Having passed MBBS from Nilratan Sarkar (NRS) Medical College, he joined Govt service and later did DMRT and MD and DNB in Radiotherapy from Kolkata. He served as Faculty and Head of the Department in a number of teaching hospitals of West Bengal. He was a very popular teacher of Medical College Hospital and served there as a Head from 2004 to 2012. After retiring from Govt. service in 2012, he joined Narayana Super Specialty Hospital, Howrah as a Senior Faculty and Teacher of DNB (Radiotherapy). Besides what is stated above, WHO had appointed him as an Expert of Cervical Cancer and Palliative Care. For nearly two decades Prof. Basu was a Faculty and Examiner for DMRT and MD (Radiotherapy) not only under Calcutta University and The West Bengal University of Health Sciences but also many other Universities of India. He was a guest Faculty for DNB (Radiotherapy) at Cancer Centre Welfare Home, Thakurpukur, Kolkata and received Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 from the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India. He was very popular among his colleagues as well as students. Prof Basu was a devoted reader and had keen interests in Bengali literature, cinema and music. He had a vast knowledge in Bengali dramas and directed dramas in his school as an alumni and also in NRS Medical College when he was a student. He breathed his last on 19th July, 2020 at Peerless Hospital, Kolkata from complications of COVID-19 infection.
